Permaculture Solutions: “The Growing Edge”

In this short clip from, “Permaculture: The Growing Edge”, permaculture designer and teacher Starhawk talks to mycologist Paul Stamets and microbiologist Dr. Elaine Ingham about the permaculture solutions they’re developing as an antidote to environmental despair. Paul Stamets shows how the solutions to many of the issues that we face today related to pollution and disease and sustainability can be found literally underfoot in the form of fungi. He demonstrates how the fungi can be used to repair the damage of an oil spill in San Francisco Bay. Meanwhile, Dr. Elaine Ingham shows how a compost tea that she created out of all natural ingredients can help repair damaged soil without pesticides

“Permaculture: The Growing Edge” is a joint project with author/activist Starhawk and director Donna Read that takes a hopeful and practical look at a path to a viable, flourishing future. The film introduces us to inspiring examples of projects, and includes a visit to David Holmgren’s own homestead, tracking deer with naturalist Jon Young, sheet mulching an inner-city garden with Hunters Point Family, and transforming an intersection into a gathering place with City Repair. In the film, Starhawk interviews some of the key figures in the Permaculture movement, including David Holmgren, Penny Livingston-Stark, James Stark, Paul Stamets, Mark Lakeman, Dr. Elaine Ingham, Maddy Harland, and others.

This is a book that combines the author's personal path of spirituality with her own personal path of ecological responsibility. The Earth Path is a book of awareness of the kinds of issues that many of us should at least be familiar. There are many issues addressed here that makes this a good book of information, even though it may seem a bit extreme at times. If you remember how passionate Starhawk is about her chosen path, you can then understand the extremities. This book does allow for you to find your own small part in how all this plays out. You may even find yourself provoked to action by the information provided.
